The Special Materials Index, which is managed by the Department of Archives & Special Collections at Arizona State University, University Libraries, is composed of nine sections, which are varied in content. Each section may include: booklets, pamphlets, small manuscripts, issues of unique newspapers and newsletters, biographies, broadsides, articles indexed from very old newspapers, reports, photographs, and more.

American Indian Index, part of the Hayden Labriola National American Indian Data Center Collection, covers prehistory to the present time and includes all topics dealing with the American Indian in Alaska, Canada, and the United States. Photographs are included in this collection.

Architecture & Environmental Design Library, holds some 280 Biltmore Hotel construction photographs that included in the Albert Chase McArthur Collection.

Arizona and Southwestern Index, dates from prehistory to the present time and covers all subjects dealing with Arizona and the Southwest including some southwestern Indian tribes. The index contains photographs and material found in the Hayden Arizona Collection in the Department of Archives & Special Collecions.

Arizona Historical Foundation Index, dates from prehistory to the present time and covers subjects dealing with Arizona and the Southwest including some southwestern Indian tribes. The index contains both photographs and material found in the Arizona Historical Foundation, which is located in the University Libraries.

Child Drama Collection Index, contains manuscript materials and books documenting the history of theatre for youth throughout the world.

Mexican American Index, part of the Hayden Chicano Research Collection, mainly contains materials and photographs from the 20th century, and covers the Mexican American experience in the U. S.

Special Collections Index, contains rare manuscripts and ephemera centered around particular persons or topics of interest to scholars.

University Archives Index, part of the University Archives Collection, covers all topics dealing with Arizona State University history. Photographs are included in this collection.

Visual Literacy Index, part of the Benedict Visual Literacy Collection, contains 20th century material dealing with the evaluation and creation of visual images.
